CHARRETTE 2024 What is Sustainable?
Like every year, architecture students from our Berlin University of Applied Sciences and Technology traveled to Copenhagen for a week to get creative with 100 students from around the world and from other disciplines. In a so-called “Design Charette”, a week-long workshop, students from different professional and cultural backgrounds came together with representatives of the Copenhagen community and local organizations to develop innovative solutions for current and complex issues in an intensive, collaborative workshop.
Transferale Zukunft findet Stadt
The Master's module Historical Constructions and Building Conservation will present some of the impressive results of students from the last two semesters at the Transferale 2024. The exhibition will take place at Silent Green - Kulturquartier - in Berlin, Wedding on September 25 and 26, 2024. The module focused on the biography and structural reuse of existing buildings. Students investigated the adaptations and conversions of buildings that are in their second or third life cycle and visualized these changes through building age mapping and plans. Models, photographs and textual descriptions of the respective atmosphere will be exhibited at the Transferale 2024.
NØEW FUTURE
Visions for the future of the Elbtower in Hamburg // This semester, as part of the NØEW FUTURE project, students of Prof. Volker Halbach from the Nuremberg Institute of Technology and Prof. Rüdiger Ebel from the Berlin University of Applied Sciences and Technology will be examining the phenomenon of “building in existing structures” using the example of the Elbtower in Hamburg, both analytically and in terms of design. The aim is to identify possibilities and ways in which the existing partially completed shell construction of the Elbtower can be programmatically and conceptually led into a new future. We warmly invite you to the exhibition opening as part of the semester project.

Students of the first semester (summer semester 2024) have analyzed a given building in Berlin and explored its characteristics in teams as an introductory task for the semester. Inspired by the architecture, the students designed individual versions of the Berlin stool, developed by Van Bo Le-Mentzel, that were intended to refer to the respective building at first glance.

Mitte 2019
In the winter semester 2018/19, a common design theme was defined across all semesters: The center of Berlin (Die Berliner Mitte). As a result, the various design modules in the Bachelor's and Master's degrees dealt with properties located in the center of Berlin. At the end of the semester, there was a large exhibition at which the projects were presented.

In the winter semester 2023/24, students of the Master's module in Building History and Architectural Theory at the BHT focused on the topic of “Architecture as Critical Practice”. The aim was to view architecture as a socially and politically responsible instrument that responds to social injustices.
Through intensive, research-based learning and collective discussions, they developed central concepts that were summarized in a final brochure. Each term was contextualized, critically questioned and linked to a specific building project in order to illustrate the transformative power of architecture.
Kollektiv Kaufhof
We would like to congratulate the students Jan Kottkamp and Leon Schnitzler for winning the first prize of the Campus Masters for their bachelor thesis “Kollektiv Kaufhof - Transformation and Revitalization of the former Galeria Kaufhof in Halle Saale”.

The event was supervised by Prof. Gerd Sedelies, lecturer M. Sc. Katharina Hagl and the two student assistants Felix Bär and Stella Hellweg.
Urban mining is the concept of considering a city, in analogy to a mine, as a treasure trove of valuable and recyclable materials, in other words, as a kind of urban material mine. In this context, terms such as upcycling, reuse or the motto of the German Pavilion at the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale with “Reduce Reuse Recycle - Resource Architecture” have also emerged.
