Exhibition of Results for the Semester Topic Ring
04 February 2020
In the winter semester 2019/20, a joint design topic was defined across all semesters: the Berliner Ring. As a result, the various design modules in the Bachelor's and Master's programmes dealt with properties located on the so-called Ring. At the end of the semester, there was a large exhibition at which the projects were presented.
In preparation for the 2019/20 winter semester, all of the course's lecturers went in search of potential building sites along the S-Bahn and motorway ring: they found wasteland and urban niches, potential building sites in the direct vicinity of the S-Bahn or next to, above or below the motorway.
The range of tasks reflects the breadth of the course: the tasks range from urban planning, structural engineering design for new buildings or construction in existing contexts, from constructive detailing, the structural system to building services engineering and project management.
The RING as a Berlin S-Bahn and motorway ring offers great urban development potential: recent projects of post-war densification and accentuation of the city silhouette, as well as the history of the ring with its closure in 1877 and the special situation during the division of Berlin, make it an exciting planning area not only for architecture students. The ring offers complex challenges and exciting approaches for the designs, elaborations and research that it connects in terms of content and/or geography.
The students have filled the abstract framework with life through their diverse ideas – a broad spectrum of different approaches, research results and exciting designs has emerged.
